The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Stanley Stewart Lemon (ASN: 0-421253), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 2d Battalion, 157th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Carracato, Italy, during the period 15 to 23 February 1944. During this period when his battalion was separated from supporting troops, First Lieutenant Lemon reconnoitered routes, posted covering forces and conducted supply and evacuation parties to and from the battalion position. On one trip as he approached the battalion command post he discovered that it was surrounded by the enemy. First Lieutenant Lemon fought his way through the encirclement to reach the headquarters. Encountering an enemy patrol, he killed and wounded several Germans and took one prisoner with him into the command post for interrogation. By his tireless energy, devotion to duty and courage under fire, First Lieutenant Lemon was largely responsible for maintaining efficient supply and evacuation for his organization, and his heroic performance reflects the high traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
