The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Loyd Julian Lein (ASN: 37545234), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company H, 2d Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division in action against enemy forces on 12 June 1944, in Normandy, France. During an attack on an enemy position, Private Lein’s company was pinned down by direct fire from an enemy 20-mm. cannon. Private Lein volunteered to destroy this enemy gun. With complete disregard for his own safety, he fearlessly worked his way through the heavy enemy fire until he reached a position from which he was able to kill or wound the enemy gun crew. Private Lein’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 101st Airborne Division, and the United States Army.
