The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) Gail Bruce Lee, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Commanding Officer of an Infantry Company of the 8th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Hau de La Rivere, France, on 10 June 1944. During the attack on Hau de La Riviere, Captain Lee was wounded but, despite his painful wound, he refused to be evacuated. He continued to personally lead his company, completely disregarding his own safety, in the face of intense enemy fire. Under his gallant leadership his company drove the enemy from their commanding position, thereby securing the company objective. The valor and courage exhibited by this officer exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 4th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
