The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Joseph J. Lazarski (ASN: 32376436), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company E, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Battalion, 320th Infantry Regiment, 35th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in France. On December 1944, during the attack by the 2nd Battalion, 320th Infantry Regiment against high ground occupied by the enemy near Remering, France, two companies were halted in their advance by intense fire from a concentration of enemy machine guns. Sergeant Lazarski made his way with a platoon of Company E to a ditch opposite the enemy position and aided in destroying all but two of the enemy guns. Then, completely disregarding his own safety, he voluntarily made his way forward along to silence the last two guns. He was severely wounded but continued on and neutralized the enemy position, thus making it possible for the Battalion to continue the assault. Sergeant Lazarski’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 35th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
