(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Paul Donald Lampru (ASN: 0-1285168), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy, in action against enemy forces in Sicily, on 1 August 1943. When most of the men in his command had become casualties, Lieutenant Lampru personally covered an orderly retreat of his platoon by hurling hand grenades at machine gun emplacements. At least one of the enemy machine guns was knocked out of action by his grenades, before he was wounded. Second Lieutenant Lampru’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
