(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Major (Field Artillery) Stuart B. Lamkin (ASN: 0-306086), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 58th Armored Field Artillery Battalion (Separate), attached to the 5th Armored Division, in action against enemy forces in Sicily, on 11 August 1943. During an amphibious landing a portion of our troops was ordered to withdraw to the protection of a high hill. This was done after all our tanks and artillery had been knocked out and the enemy launched an attack with overwhelming force of infantry. Major Lamkin voluntarily set up and operated a machine gun an exposed position to cover the retreat of our troops, and by this action he held up the attack until our troops had reached safety. A few seconds later Major Lamkin lost his life. His voluntary action in protecting his comrades when he himself could have been one of the first to safety exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
