Headquarters, FIFTH U.S. Army, General Orders No. 68 (April 30, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) John Thomas Lamb, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 351st Infantry Regiment, 88th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near Tufo, Italy, on 30 March 1944. Lieutenant Lamb led a five-man Infantry patrol into an enemy stronghold, reaching a German outpost. The patrol was challenged and received heavy fire from an enemy machine gun and small arms. Although wounded in this action he successfully withdrew his men. Using his radio, he directed cannon and mortar fire on the hostile position. Continuing his mission he next encountered a German force of approximately 15 men occupying a house. He rushed the position and by the use of grenades and rifle fire, forced the enemy from their stronghold. In the savage fire fight that followed at least seven Germans were killed. When one member of his patrol was wounded, he risked his life to carry the man to a covered position. When the reinforced German fire became too strong for his small group, he moved his patrol a short distance and again used radio to direct artillery, mortar, and cannon fire on the German installations. Ordering his patrol to withdraw, he remained in position alone to provide covering fire, retiring only when his men had reached safety. Second Lieutenant Lamb’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 88th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
