LaBelle, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 399th Infantry Regiment, 100th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 16 March 1945, in the vicinity of Bitche, France. Private First Class LaBelle fought from an exposed position for eight hours to hold off the initial German assault, covering the withdrawal of a surrounded platoon and taking a position in the Company Command Post long enough for the battalion to set up a new holding line. Private First Class LaBelle’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 100th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
