The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Clyde Krebs (ASN: 39141583), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 127th Infantry Regiment, 32d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near Santa Fe, Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 10 March 1945. Sergeant Krebs, an acting squad leader, and two other men manned a position on the perimeter which covered a deep, wooded draw and the trail leading from it towards his fox hole. In the darkest of midnight, a Japanese force of 12 to 15 men approached quietly and attacked the position with rifle fire, hand grenades, bayonets, and land mines. In spite of the viciousness of the attack, Sergeant Krebs and his companions courageously repulsed every approach made by the enemy. Then, his companions were killed, one by rifle fire and the other by concussion from a land mine, and the enemy continued their attack. Sergeant Krebs not only threw all of his own grenades and fired all of his ammunition at the enemy, but also used all the grenades and ammunition of his dead comrades. He then fixed his bayonet and waited calmly for the enemy to close in, unaware that his destructive fire had broken the attack. When daylight finally came, he counted six dead enemy soldiers near by, one of them less than two feet from his foxhole. All of the slain enemy had fixed bayonets and land mines. Sergeant Krebs actions prevented the enemy from gaining control of an important position and from infiltrating under cover of darkness to rear installations. His extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
