The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private First Class Frank Stanley Kolodziek (ASN: 33275014), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in France, on 15 June 1944. When intense enemy machine gun fire from a village delayed the advance of his company, Private First Class Kolodziek, armed with a sniper’s rifle, moved forward and succeeded in silencing the gun by killing three members of its crew. Continuing his advance, he encountered an enemy platoon entering the village. He moved toward the enemy ring with his rifle and killed or wounded five Germans. As Private First Class Kolodziek attempted to close with the enemy, fire from a hostile machine gun mortally wounded him. Private First Class Kolodziek’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
