The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant James R. Kellogg, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 333d Infantry Regiment, 84th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Germany, on 13 April 1945. Encountering intense small arms fire while approaching an enemy town, Sergeant Kellogg led his squad in an attack, personally killing four of the enemy and taking seven prisoners. Later, he shot five enemy defending a bridge, after which he severed all wires leading to demolition charges on the structure. When tanks of his column were again halted by enemy fire, he led another attack overpowering the enemy with hand grenades. Sergeant Kellogg personally killed or wounded nine and captured thirty of the enemy. Sergeant Kellogg’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 84th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
