The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant [then Lieutenant, Junior Grade] James Howard Jacobs, United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Chief Engineer of the U.S.S. LERAY WILSON (DE-414), in action against enemy Japanese forces in the Southwest Pacific War Area on 10 January 1945. When his ship was severely damaged by hostile aircraft, Lieutenant Jacobs remained steadfast at his station in the engine room and, although almost overcome by dense smoke and fumes, aided in maintaining power and fire pumps in operation, thereby enabling damage control parties to combat fires successfully. His courage, initiative and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
