The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Chief Information Technician (SEAL) ***** *****, United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action in connection with operations against the enemy while serving as the Leading Chief Petty Officer of a special operations unit in Afghanistan from 8 January to 16 April 2002. Master Chief Petty Officer ***** displayed incredible valor, inspiring leadership, and tactical expertise while leading a 74-man assault force during over 30 combat operations. His personal gallantry was evident during several time-sensitive missions, including two air assault operations against suspected enemy convoys in which he exercised tactical command and control of multiple air and ground maneuver elements while under fire. Master Chief Petty Officer ***** led several dismounted patrols through enemy-influenced terrain to capture high-ranking enemy leadership figures. He also led a combat search and rescue mission conducted under extreme environmental conditions, in which he exposed himself to leaking fuel amidst burning wreckage in order to save critically wounded crewmen. Master Chief Petty Officer *****’s contributions during the extended period of combat operations measurably advanced U.S. national security objectives. By his bold leadership, wise judgment, and complete dedication to duty, Master Chief Petty Officer ***** reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
