The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Signalman Second Class Robert George Hadden, United States Coast Guard, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy. Signalman Second Class Hadden, at the peril to his own life, secured the rescue of all personnel aboard his ship, PC-590, during the typhoon on 9 October 1945, at Buckner Bay, Okinawa Gunto. Having lost wireless communications during the storm through high waves breaking over the deck, he made his way aft to the stern, where he used an Aldis Lamp to spot a rescue ship, exchanging vital information and directions to effect the rescue of all on board as the PC 590 was breaking in half and sinking. His final message was sent with an ordinary flashlight.
