Hollis Stephens enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1950. During the Vietnam War he served as Liaison between Army Transportation Units and Coast Guard Explosive Loading Detachments, earning a Bronze Star. From 1977 to 1981 he served as the THIRD Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard. He retired from the Coast Guard in 1981.
