Philip Smith enlisted in the Cost Gurd in 1949 and atteded the Yeoman School at the Cost Guard Training Center, Groton, Connecticut, in 1950. From 1973 to 1977 he served as the SECOND Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard. He retired from the Coast Guard in 1977.
