James Olson graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, New London, Connecticut, Class of 1970. He was a distinguished aviator, flying over 5500 hours in Sikorsky rescue helicopters and was involved in hundreds of rescues while saving and assisting mariners in many extreme circumstances. He retired as a U.S. Coast Guard Rear Admiral in 2005.
