Douglas Henderson graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, New London, Connecticut, Class of 1936. He retired as a U.S. Coast Guard Rear Admiral in 1969.

    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Rear Admiral Douglas Bruce Henderson, United States Coast Guard, was awarded the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Chief, Office of Engineering from January 1968 to February 1969. Admiral Henderson served as Project Manager, Polar Transportation Requirements Study which proved of inestimable value to the Department of Transportation in the planning and programming for future polar problems on a systems basis.
