The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Eugene J. Jones (ASN: 32713278), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with the 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, In action against the enemy at Los Negros Island, Admiralty Group, on 20 March 1944. When the patrol of which Private First Class Jones was a member ran into heavy enemy opposition near Lombrum Point, the officer leading the patrol and three other men were severely wounded. Private First Class Jones, with utter disregard for personal safety, crawled under heavy enemy fire to within fifteen yards of the enemy position. He assisted his officer to the rear, and then returned three times to save the others. With another man he tended their wounds and fought off two enemy patrols which came forward to attack. As the officer was too severely wounded to be moved, Private First Class Jones went back alone through dim jungle trails in terrain occupied by the enemy to the regimental perimeter for help. Upon organization of a rescue party, he then led it back to the position to save his patrol. The outstanding courage displayed by Private First Class Jones on this occasion was responsible for saving the life of the officer, and was an inspiration to his comrades. Private First Class Jones’ extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
