The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Distinguished Service Medal to Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy Michael D. Stevens, United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States while serving as the 13th Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy from September 2012 to September 2016. MCPON Stevens exhibited inspirational leadership, astute critical logic, and tireless enthusiasm advancing interests of all Navy Total Force stakeholders. Hid credibility helped develop policies central to the enduring success of the Navy enterprise. As Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy to two Chiefs of Naval Operations, his comprehension of nearly every issue affecting the fleet enabled him to navigate complex issues, influencing decisional outcomes with service-wide implications. During Congressional testimony, he represented quality-of-life priorities, ensuring adequate funding for all Fore empowerment programs. He was directly involved in the E-Sailor initiative in providing 21st Century Sailors quicker access to current Navy information, and promoting the Chief of Naval Operations’ strategic guidance, Navy Core Values, and Lines of Effort. As advisor to the Senior Enlisted Academy and Command Master Chief/Chief of the Boat course he ensured future enlisted leaders possessed the training, education, and resources needed to provide guidance to Commanding Officers. MCPON Stevens’ superior performance of duties highlights the culmination of 33 years of honorable and dedicated service. By his superior leadership, wise judgment, and deep devotion to duty, MCPON Stevens reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
