The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Major (Air Corps) Robert Donald Johnston (ASN: 0-435787), United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Pilot of a P-47 Fighter Airplane in the 81st Fighter Squadron, 50th Fighter Group, NINTH Air Force, in action on 25 November 1944, while leading eight P-47 aircraft as fighter escort for medium bombers whose target was an enemy troop and tank concentration near Landau, Germany. On this date, when only five minutes from the target area, 60 enemy fighters were seen approaching the bomber formation. Despite the overwhelming odds, Major Johnston led his force in a direct attack on the vastly superior enemy formation and was immediately separated from his flight in the ensuing savage encounter. Alone now, amidst a swarm of enemy fighters, he relentlessly attacked their aircraft and destroyed three of them, halting his attack only when he had exhausted his ammunition. As a direct result of Major Johnston’s extraordinary heroism and outstanding airmanship, the large bomber formation reached its target unmolested. Major Johnston’s actions on this occasion reflect highest credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
