The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) George Edward Jenkins (ASN: 0-1300649), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 47th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in in France, on 22 June 1944. First Lieutenant Jenkins, a platoon leader in an Infantry company, led the assault squad of his assaulting platoon on an enemy strongpoint, known to have at least three machine guns and one 47-mm. gun, and known to be well-fortified by wire entanglements and emplacements. Following dangerously close to a supporting mortar barrage on the concentration, First Lieutenant Jenkins ordered fixed bayonets and personally led his men directly in the face of withering fire of all weapons. By his cool, fearless leadership and employment of all platoon weapons, he successfully routed the enemy which had halted the advance of the battalion. After driving the enemy from their position, he reorganized immediately and kept his men under perfect control. His courage and leadership under fire inspired and encouraged his men to their utmost, resulting in a continual advance with a minimum of casualties. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
