James Southerland graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Class of 1936. He became a World War II Navy ACE, credited with shooting down five enemy aircraft in aerial combat. He was killed in a flying accident off Jacksonville, Florida, on October 12, 1949.
