The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Anibal Irizarry (ASN: 12021032), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near St. Cloud, Algeria, on 9 November 1942. On his own initiative and without command, Private Irizarry worked forward to silence an enemy machine gun nest that was holding up his company’s advance. He silenced the machine gun and killed the entire crew with his automatic rifle. During the last burst of fire of his weapon he was seriously wounded by fire from another enemy machine gun. Private Irizarry’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
