After graduating from high school, Howard Ingling attended college at Ohio Wesleyan University and medical school at then Western Reserve University near Cleveland. During World War II, in Europe, he served as a battalion surgeon with the 20th Field Hospital and was recognized both for fashioning a portable X-ray machine and for his courage in getting wounded men from the battlefield.

    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Medical Corps) Howard Harrison Ingling, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as a Medical Officer with the 23d Armored Infantry Battalion, 7th Armored Division, in action against enemy forces in France, from 14 August 1944 to 10 September 1944. Captain Ingling’s outstanding leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
