The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Ensign John Charles Snyder, Jr., United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight in the line of his profession on 6 July 1942, while participating in an aerial flight as Co-Pilot of a U.S. Navy Patrol Plane. Ensign Snyder handled the engine throttles skillfully and in close cooperation and coordination with the Senior Pilot when the Patrol Plane was landed twice in a small temporary lake formed by melted ice and rescued the crew of a stranded U.S. Army plane. Ensign Snyder manned the engine throttles during each take-off. In an extraordinary demonstration of professional skill and judgment he applied the maximum power of the engines at the right instant and in perfect harmony with the Senior Pilot’s manipulation of the controls so that the heavily loaded plane in each instance was taken off in a superb demonstration of airmanship. This action reflects great credit upon the United States Naval Service.
