(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Staff Sergeant Charles Joseph Humpley (ASN: 20609991), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy, in action against enemy forces at Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, on 6 January 1943. During an encounter with the Japanese, Staff Sergeant Humpley rescued one of his men under heavy machine gun fire. After returning to his own lines with the wounded man, Sergeant Humpley went forward again to reconnoiter. He surprised an enemy patrol and killed four of the Japanese with hand grenades. During the entire action, he remained completely cool, and by his conduct, greatly stimulated the morale of his platoon. Staff Sergeant Humpley’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
