The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Charles P. Hibberd, United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commander of a Patrol Plane in action against enemy Japanese forces in the Battle of Midway on 4 and 5 June 1942. On the night of 3 – 4 June 1942, Lieutenant Hibberd’s plane successfully located the enemy at a great distance from his base, and closing the range, boldly attacked the enemy Japanese forces with torpedo fire. His successful completion of this assigned mission and his courageous devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
