The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Thomas Moore Humfreville (ASN: 0-1302466), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 184th Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near Barauen, Leyte, Philippine Islands, on 24 October 1944. When Company F was attacking a strongly defended ridge, Lieutenant Humfreville, leading the center platoon, aggressively led his men forward and drove back the enemy, even after the flank platoons had been halted by enemy fire. When his platoon was eventually checked by machine gun fire, he boldly advanced and eliminated the weapon with hand grenades. Encouraging his men to resume the assault, he took a position in front of the advance squad and led the attack until he and several of his men were hit and wounded. As he was instructing his platoon sergeant to fall back and reorganize the platoon, the enemy counterattacked in force. Painfully wounded and in the face of certain death, Lieutenant Humfreville deliberately exposed himself further by opening fire on the enemy and diverting their attention to himself. While thus delaying the enemy’s counterattack long enough for his platoon to reorganize, he was bayonetted and killed by the enemy. Through his magnificent heroism in facing a counterattack while already wounded and with no hope of survival, Lieutenant Humfreville, at the cost of his life, enabled his platoon to strengthen its position and repel the enemy. Second Lieutenant Humfreville’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
