Crane, United States Navy, was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for heroic conduct in aiding in the rescue of an exhausted swimmer, while serving aboard the U.S.S. INDEPENDENCE (CVL-22), in the Caroline Islands, on 3 October 1944.
