(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Torpedoman’s Mate Melbin B. Smith, United States Navy, was awarded the Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as Chief of the Boat of the U.S.S. S-37 (SS-142), in action against enemy Japanese forces during her THIRD War Patrol of that submarine in the Makassar and Lombok Straits Area, from 2 to 20 February 1942. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
