Rooke, United States Navy, was awarded the Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Automatic Weapons Officer of the U.S.S. CALHOUN (APD-2), in the vicinity of Okinawa on 6 April 1945, when an overwhelming and highly coordinated Japanese attack, his ship was struck by bombs and several suicide planes which started fires and caused the loss of all power and water pressure.
