Steele, United States Navy, was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for heroic conduct in rescuing the pilot of a burning aircraft, which had crashed on the fantail of the U.S.S. BATAAN (CVL-29), at Pearl Harbor, on 11 December 1944.
