The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Armor) Roger Joseph Horan (ASN: 0-1012610), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 32d Armored Regiment, 3d Armored Division, in action against enemy forces in France, on 29 June 1944. Second Lieutenant Horan distinguished himself by leading his tank group in a vicious attack against fortified positions of the Germans. He exposed himself to enemy fire by dismounting from his lead tank and reorganizing the temporarily disorganized infantry units supporting his attack. Lieutenant Horan was mortally wounded while engaged in this work. Second Lieutenant Horan’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 3d Armored Division, and the United States Army.
