Steinke, United States Navy, was awarded the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. GWIN (DD-433), in action in the vicinity of Okinawa, from 23 March 1945 to 21 June 1945.

GWIN (DD-433), in action against the Japanese at Okinawa, on 4 May 1945. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
