Chapman, United States Navy, was awarded the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as First Lieutenant and Damage Control Officer aboard the U.S.S. SANTEE (CVE-29), during the Battle for Leyte Gulf, on 25 October 1944.
