(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Lieutenant Ralph F. Pleetman, United States Navy, was awarded a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star for gallantry in action as Assistant Approach Officer of the U.S.S. SEA DEVIL (SS-400), on the THIRD War Patrol of that submarine during the period 7 February 1945 to 20 April 1945, in enemy controlled waters of the Yellow Sea. Lieutenant Pleetman assisted his Commanding Officer in conducting five aggressive torpedo attacks on a seven-ship enemy convoy to sink four freighters and two escort vessels for a total of 17,600 tons. In addition, while his ship was performing lifeguard duty, he helped effect the rescue of three Marine aviators. His conduct throughout was an inspiration to his officers and men and in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
