The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) William R. Hogan, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with a Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, in action against enemy forces in Sicily, in July 1943. Second Lieutenant Hogan drove a jeep toward enemy lines in the face of heavy machine gun fire in an effort to locate a missing man. He and a Sergeant with him were seriously wounded when an anti-tank shell hit near them. Although both his legs were useless, he succeeded in driving the vehicle over mountainous roads back to the command post where he delivered a report of the situation which enabled his commander to wipe out enemy opposition. Second Lieutenant Hogan’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
