(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Lieutenant William V. Mitchell, United States Navy, was awarded the Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Diving Officer of the U.S.S. BLUEFISH (SS-222), during the SIXTH War Patrol of that submarine in enemy Japanese-controlled waters, from 22 July to 14 September 1944. Rendering valuable assistance to his Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Mitchell contributed materially to the sinking of more than 28,000 tons of enemy shipping, and to the success of his vessel in evading enemy countermeasures. His courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
