Hodes, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 753d Tank Battalion (Separate), attached to the 36th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near Mittelwihr, France, on 18 December 1944. Lieutenant Hodes dismounted from his tank when his unit was pinned down by the enemy, and with full disregard for his personal safety, proceeded on foot to take command of the battle which stalemated the enemy forces until nightfall when he successfully withdrew his forces to safety.
