(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Charles William Hoak (ASN: 33393861), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 399th Infantry Regiment, 100th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in the vicinity of St. Remy, France, on 6 November 1944. When his unit was pinned down by enemy fire, Private First Class Hoak single-handedly charged a hostile machine gun nest, firing his M1 rifle from his hip. When his rifle jammed, Private First Class Hoak fell backward, pretending to be dead. The enemy focused their attention elsewhere, whereupon Private First Class Hoak, clearing his weapon, jumped up and firing his weapon so demoralized the enemy unit that they surrendered, enabling the Americans to seize their objective. Private First Class Hoak’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 100th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
