Porterfield, United States Navy, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Torpedo Bomber Pilot in Torpedo Squadron TWO (VT-2), embarked in U.S.S. HORNET (CV-12), over the Philippine Islands, on 21 September 1944.
