Erwin, United States Navy, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Pilot of a Dive Bomber in Bombing Squadron ELEVEN (VB-11), embarked in U.S.S. HORNET (CV-12), in the Battle off Samar, on 25 October 1944.
