(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Ensign Edward G. Welch, United States Navy, was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action as Communications Officer and Plotting Officer of the U.S.S. BERGALL (SS-320), during the SECOND War Patrol of that submarine in enemy-controlled waters from 2 to 23 December 1944. Ensign Welch rendered invaluable assistance to his Commanding Officer in carrying out attacks to sink a heavy enemy cruiser and probably damage another, and in employing successful evasive tactics after the BERGALL has sustained damage by enemy gunfire. By his leadership and devotion to duty, Lieutenant Commander Ison served as an inspiration to the officers and men on board the BERGALL and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
