(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Lieutenant Commander Robert L. Ison, United States Navy, was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry and intrepidity as Assistant Approach Officer, Navigator, and Executive Officer of the U.S.S. BERGALL (SS-320), during the SECOND War Patrol of that submarine in enemy-controlled waters from 2 to 23 December 1944. Lieutenant Commander Ison rendered invaluable assistance to his Commanding Officer in carrying out attacks to sink a heavy enemy cruiser and probably damage another, and in employing successful evasive tactics after the BERGALL has sustained damage by enemy gunfire. By his leadership and devotion to duty, Lieutenant Commander Ison served as an inspiration to the officers and men on board the BERGALL and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
