Patterson, United States Navy, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Fighter Plane Pilot in Bombing Squadron EIGHTY (VB-80), embarked in U.S.S. TICONDEROGA (CV-14), in the Philippine Islands area, on 5 November 1944.
