(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Ensign Lloyd Russell, United States Navy, was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action as Diving Officer aboard the U.S.S. BALAO (SS-285), during the FOURTH War Patrol of that Submarine in the PAO, from 6 February 1944 to 9 March 1944. Skilled in the performance of duty, Ensign Russell rendered invaluable assistance to his Commanding Officer in conducting aggressive attacks against enemy shipping to sink four ships totaling over 20,000 tons and in employing successful evasive tactics during severe enemy gunfire and depth charge attacks. His devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
