POMPANO (SS-181), on the FIRST War Patrol of that submarine during the period 18 December 1941 to 31 January 1942, in enemy controlled waters near Wake Island. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
