(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) Dennis Hewitt, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 6th Armored Infantry Regiment, 1st Armored Division, in action against enemy forces in Tunisia, in May 1943. Just north of Mateur, Tunisia, Captain Hewitt’s unit of the 6th Armored Infantry Regiment attacked and captured Hill 273. The hill was taken in the morning, but since it was the commanding terrain of the entire sector, the Germans counterattacked fiercely and recaptured it, in the afternoon. That night Captain Hewitt took a platoon of tanks and with Infantrymen leading the way, they again captured the hill and this time held it. Captain Hewitt’s outstanding leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
