Sergeant Floyd conducted a one-man counterattack against a Japanese Banzai charge. He ordered his men to hold their positions while he crawled from foxhole to foxhole, dropping grenades and firing his Tommy Gun to send the remaining enemy soldiers retreating to their holes. Sergeant Hesse’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 6th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
